Victim Support Scotland submission of 6 December 2021

PE1887/E - Create an Unborn Victims of Violence Act

Following on from your letter to Victim Support Scotland last month asking for our backing of the petition outlining the case to Create an Unborn Victims of Violence Act, I am writing to give our support.

As Scotland’s leading charity for everyone after crime – victims, witnesses and family members – we know only too well the serious impact that crime can have on people physically, psychologically and emotionally.

Our mission is centred on ensuring that everyone affected by crime receives high quality support and care to more forward after a crime, and that they are treated with dignity and respect.

Victim Support Scotland also believes that changes in law and policy should reflect and be informed by the views and lived experience of people affected by crime.

We therefore believe that an update to the law is necessary to reflect the severity of the impact of domestic violence that causes miscarriage, leading to more appropriate sentences and ultimately a fairer justice system for everyone.
