That was interesting to hear, and I am particularly interested in following up on what was said about exporting and importing and what we can do to promote Scottish timber in the rest of the UK. There is a recognition that a lot of the demand for house building might be south of the border, so it would be of particular interest to explore how, as policy makers, we can better support export of Scottish timber to the rest of the UK.

I have a question primarily for Stuart Goodall, but I am interested in hearing input from all the witnesses. The vast majority of timber that we are using in Scotland at the moment is imported—the proportion is somewhere between two thirds and about 80 per cent. What could we be doing to better facilitate the use of Scottish timber in the broader economy, and what could that do to incentivise greater forestry planting?

Land where there is a clear, tangible economic benefit coming off it.

My question comes off the back of Laura Mitchell’s. How can we balance the peatland ambitions with productive land use and ensuring that a productive rural land-based economy is maintained? There is recognition from the witnesses that peatland ambitions cannot fill that void for many rural communities.

I do not want to take us down a rabbit hole. I appreciate that we could probably talk about what economic productivity is for more than the 50 minutes that we have left, so I am happy for other people to jump in.

In previous sessions, we have talked quite a lot about how funding has decreased in real terms while farmers in Scotland are being asked to do more and more with less and less. Is the Government being honest about what it is actually asking from farmers, or do we need to get to a point where the funding actually matches what is required? Do we need to ask farmers to do less if the money will not be there?

Can I jump in on that?

Pete Ritchie raised an interesting point about the word “ambition”. Obviously there are headline ambitions in the plan, but my frustration is that they are quite broad brush in nature. They are quite agreeable, but they are not quantifiable or precise. We would all like rural Scotland and agriculture to be in a nice place by 2030, but we need very clear deliverables in order to get there, and my frustration is that, as we have heard in previous evidence sessions, we do not even have a baseline to start from, let alone any idea of where we want to be. It is that lack of clarity about what the phrase “our ambitions” means in a quantifiable sense that is a frustration of mine.

Artemis Pana touched on something that has been a recurring theme when she said that it is the rural support plan and not just the agricultural support plan. Is the plan too broad in its ambitions? Does that mean that we do not have specific and quantifiable objectives for what success might mean for the plan come 2030?
