Cape Campbeltown Ready for Blast off

  • Submitted by: Michael Russell, Argyll and Bute, Scottish National Party.
  • Date lodged: Wednesday, 04 March 2015
  • Motion reference: S4M-12536

That the Parliament welcomes the inclusion of Machrihanish on the shortlist of possible sites for a UK spaceport; notes that it is the only Scottish location on the list in the ownership of the local community, given that the site was purchased from the MOD by the Machrihanish Airbase Community Company in 2012; believes that the Machrihanish Airbase has considerable advantages in terms of length of runway, sea approach and availability of infrastructure; commends the support that the application has had from Highlands and Islands Enterprise, Argyll and Bute Council and the local population; is mindful of the considerable economic opportunities that this development could bring to the area and therefore hopes that Machrihanish, or Cape Campbeltown as some are already calling it, will be supported across Scotland as the right place to host this new development and will therefore be chosen as the final location for the UK spaceport.
