  • Motion reference: S6M-04060

That the Parliament notes the launch of a fundraising campaign to build a memorial cairn to commemorate three men from Tolsta Chaolais, in the Isle of Lewis, who drowned when their fishing vessel sank in 1908; understands that the Boy’s Delight SY 542 had left Tolsta Chaolais for Loch Hamnaway in Uig, in January 1908, to fish for herring before becoming swamped; pays tribute to John Macleod, Angus Morrison and Kenneth Macaulay who lost their lives in the tragedy, and to the only survivor, Malcolm Macarthur; recognises the impact of the incident on the local community of Tolsta Chaolais both at the time and to the present day; welcomes the campaign for the memorial, which, it understands is to be built from local stone, to be installed in Tolsta Chaolais; understands that the Hamnaway Memorial Cairn Group have been receiving generous donations towards the cairn from local businesses and individuals, and are hoping to raise the remaining funds through online fundraising, and wishes the group all the best with their fundraising efforts for the memorial cairn’s construction and installation.
