Tom Stillie Sword for Inverclyde Athletic’s Stalwart

  • Submitted by: Stuart McMillan, Greenock and Inverclyde, Scottish National Party.
  • Date lodged: Tuesday, 02 November 2021
  • Motion reference: S6M-01853

That the Parliament congratulates Gerry Gaffney on being presented with the Tom Stillie Sword at the recent 4J Studios scottishathletics and jogscotland Annual Awards 2021, which were held at the Hilton Hotel in Glasgow; notes that the governing body presents the award to the person who it deems to have contributed the most to Scottish Athletics within the preceding year; understands that Gerry received this accolade in recognition of his work during the COVID-19 pandemic lockdowns by assisting Scottish Athletics to develop the necessary control documentation, which includes guidance and risk assessment, to allow the resumption of local and national competitions across Scotland; further understands that this required Gerry to meet with Scottish Athletics officials and representatives from clubs across the country via video calls and, when permitted, visiting athletics venues to provide an assessment prior to granting permission to host an event; appreciates that Scottish Athletics awarded the Tom Stillie Sword to Inverclyde Athletics Club in 2010, which, it understands, was the first and only time the governing body deemed a club worthy of the award; commends Gerry for all his efforts during the pandemic to support athletics clubs and its athletes, thanks him for his dedication to the sport, and wishes him well for the future.
