New Gaelic Worship Resource from the Church of Scotland

  • Submitted by: Alasdair Allan, Na h-Eileanan an Iar, Scottish National Party.
  • Date lodged: Tuesday, 11 August 2020
  • Motion reference: S5M-22401

That the Parliament welcomes the Church of Scotland’s new guide to Gaelic worship and Bible study; understands that the resource is designed as a general guide for those less confident in Gaelic language registers that are commonly associated with formal worship; notes that formal church registers in Gaelic differ from vernacular language in grammar and syntax and has proven challenging to both native speakers and language learners; further notes that the guide was produced by the Church of Scotland’s Gaelic Language Development Officer, who started in post in 2019, and hopes that the guide will achieve its aim of encouraging more people to engage with worship through Gaelic.
