New Breakthrough Ultrasound Technology

  • Submitted by: Gordon MacDonald, Edinburgh Pentlands, Scottish National Party.
  • Date lodged: Monday, 30 September 2019
  • Motion reference: S5M-19187

That the Parliament congratulates Heriot-Watt University scientists on the creation of breakthrough super-resolution ultrasound technology, which is expected to lead to earlier cancer detection and more effective treatment, initially for prostate cancer; notes that the new technique enables the accurate mapping of blood flow of the tumour, enabling early detection and decision-making about suitable treatment; understands that the new enhanced images can use existing clinical 2D ultrasound equipment and standard contrast enhanced ultrasound modes, meaning that hospitals will not need to invest in new equipment to benefit from the image enhancing; recalls Scotland’s heritage in pioneering medical ultrasound, starting with its invention over 60 years ago, and welcomes the news that the team aims to start clinical trials with prostate patients at the Western General Hospital in Edinburgh later in 2019.
