The Imprisonment of Nasrin Sotoudeh

  • Submitted by: Ruth Maguire, Cunninghame South, Scottish National Party.
  • Date lodged: Friday, 29 March 2019
  • Motion reference: S5M-16686

That the Parliament expresses concern regarding the imprisonment of Nasrin Sotoudeh; understands that the Iranian women’s rights lawyer and head campaigner has been sentenced to 38 years in prison and 148 lashes; believes that Nasrin has been responsible for defending the rights of oppressed women in Iran for many years; considers that the work of human rights defenders is the most powerful tool in the fight for freedoms, which remain out of reach for so many around the world, especially Nasrin; acknowledges her courage, and calls for her immediate release.
