That the Parliament acknowledges the success of the Orkney Sports Awards 2018, which were held on 25 January 2019 at Kirkwall Grammar School in front of a record audience of over 300 guests; congratulates Sarah MacPhail on being named Sportsperson of the Year after a year that saw her captain Scotland’s under-21 netball team and break into the full national squad; understands that Sarah fought off strong competition in the form of Michael Drever and Ogla Hamilton, who also had highly impressive seasons in para-trap shooting and cycling respectively; further congratulates Andrew Torbet, who beat off strong competition from a shortlist of eight to win Young Sportsperson of the Year in recognition of his recent call-up to the Scotland squash squad; acknowledges the success of Rebecca Reid, Mhairi Linklater and Belinda Morrison in the Volunteer, Young Volunteer and School Volunteer of the Year categories respectively; notes that the Team of the Year Award went to the Orkney Octopush team, which continues to provide a pipeline of players for the national and Great Britain squads; recognises that it was a particularly successful night for Orkney’s gymnasts, who picked up the Young Team of the Year title, while their coach, Jocelyn Tulloch, took the honour of Coach of the Year for her outstanding work in a sport that is growing in popularity locally; welcomes the recognition also given to the contribution made to Orkney swimming by Derek Allen, who won Official of the Year, and Mike Stout, who took the Services to Sport Award for his longstanding commitment to the development of squash and racquetball in the county over many years; further congratulates Freya Kemp, who, as well as being part of the all-conquering gymnastics team, also won Performance of the Year for her terrific display at the international kickboxing championships in Portugal in 2018; thanks the team at Active Schools and all of the sponsors for making such a successful event possible; further thanks the former Glasgow Warriors and Scotland rugby captain, Al Kellock, for attending as the guest of honour, providing inspiration for local athletes of all ages and enabling Orkney’s under-11 football team to Facetime Greig Laidlaw and Stuart Hogg at the start of the evening; pays tribute to all the athletes, coaches, volunteers and officials who helped demonstrate the strength, breadth and depth of sporting achievement in Orkney, and wishes them continued success in the future.
