Jenners Department Store

  • Submitted by: Jeremy Balfour, Lothian, Scottish Conservative and Unionist Party.
  • Date lodged: Monday, 13 August 2018
  • Motion reference: S5M-13491

That the Parliament notes the announcement that the House of Fraser department store chain has been bought by Sports Direct; further notes that House of Fraser has owned Jenners, located at the east end of Princes Street in Edinburgh, for the last 13 years; acknowledges that Jenners was the oldest independent department store in Scotland until its acquisition in 2005; understands that the store was designed by the celebrated Scottish architect, William Hamilton Beattie, who was responsible for designing the Balmoral Hotel and Carlton Hotel, and that it is a category A listed building; acknowledges that the store, often referred to as the Harrods of the North, is viewed as something of an Edinburgh institution, famous for its Christmas tree that stands 40ft tall, and hopes that, following the acquisition, Jenners will maintain its identity on Princes Street, offering shoppers a range of quality merchandise.
