Broomhouse Decides

  • Submitted by: Gordon MacDonald, Edinburgh Pentlands, Scottish National Party.
  • Date lodged: Tuesday, 26 June 2018
  • Motion reference: S5M-12994

That the Parliament congratulates members of the Broomhouse Centre, who have raised sufficient funds to carry out the Broomhouse Decides grant project; notes that the project, which is budgeted at £20,000, allows for community members and organisations to apply for grants worth between £250 and £2,500 that take place in Broomhouse, Parkhead or Sighthill; appreciates that the grants allow for local ideas, with a particular focus on children and young people’s activities, community food activities, improving communications and reducing social isolation, to be developed and realised in the area; believes that Broomhouse Decides will help to develop and engage communities by allowing them to have a direct say in how local money is spent in their area; appreciates that participatory budgeting, such as Broomhouse Decides, puts decisions about how to invest in communities into the hands of the people who live and work in them; thanks Bridie Ashrowan for her efforts as CEO of the Broomhouse Centre & Enterprises and Chair of Joining the Dots in successfully applying for the grant to fund the project; acknowledges that Joining the Dots is a pro-active local action group and partnership, which was set up in 2016 and is made up of Broomhouse Health Strategy Group, Broomhouse Community One Stop Shop & Foodbank, the BIG Music Project, Edinburgh Napier University, local GPs, the City of Edinburgh Council and NHS Lothian, and wishes the Broomhouse Centre well for its work to improve the lives of those within the local community.
