Chambers McMillan

  • Submitted by: Ash Regan, Edinburgh Eastern, Scottish National Party.
  • Date lodged: Tuesday, 26 June 2018
  • Motion reference: S5M-12984

That the Parliament congratulates Chambers McMillan, a family-run architect firm based in Portobello, Edinburgh on winning the 2018 Saltire Society Housing Design Awards Inclusive Family Home Award; considers this a remarkable achievement; acknowledges that the firm renewed and recast a nondescript semi-detached bungalow, also in the Edinburgh Eastern constituency, to accommodate the support needs of a young family member who is a wheelchair user; notes that the judges recognised the commitment and expertise of the architects, along with the enthusiasm of the client, in creating an exceptional project that leverages a modest budget to produce a truly inclusive home; further notes that Ian and Thea McMillan of Chambers McMillan built their own accessible home, "The Ramp House", for their daughter who is a wheelchair user, which enables her to move around the family home barrier-free, with all levels accessed by ramps; understands that, from their experience of having a daughter with additional needs, the McMillan's always approach inclusive projects from a user's rather than an architect's viewpoint and acknowledges that they are currently working on what it sees as an exciting new project for The Yard, an adventure play centre for disabled children in Dundee, and wishes them all continued success with future projects.
