UN International Day of Women and Girls in Science

  • Submitted by: Gillian Martin, Aberdeenshire East, Scottish National Party.
  • Date lodged: Thursday, 01 February 2018
  • Motion reference: S5M-10241

That the Parliament notes that 11 February 2018 is the UN International Day of Women and Girls in Science which seeks to end bias in STEM subjects; understands that women are underrepresented in Scotland across a range of STEM sectors, with only 18% working in digital technology and just 27% of those with STEM qualifications remaining in the industry; believes that increasing women’s contribution to STEM would be worth as much as £170 million per annum to Scotland’s economy, and celebrates initiatives by organisations such as Equate Scotland, which tackle inequality and encourage inclusive growth in STEM.
