Vacant Land in Glasgow

  • Submitted by: Adam Tomkins, Glasgow, Scottish Conservative and Unionist Party.
  • Date lodged: Tuesday, 26 September 2017
  • Motion reference: S5M-07917

That the Parliament notes with concern that Glasgow has the largest concentration of derelict land in Scotland, with 783 sites amounting to 1,110 hectares in some of the city’s most deprived areas; understands that this is the equivalent of 1,300 football pitches, and that 70% of this land has been vacant for more than 15 years; further understands that Glasgow City Council owns just under half of the empty sites; urges the council to do more to redevelop this land, which it considers blights local communities and could be used for urban regeneration in areas experiencing multiple deprivation; welcomes investment to bring the land back into use, which is helping to fund a number of new commercial sites, and encourages Glasgow City Council to assess how this investment could be used to create more housing stock of all tenure types, where it is possible to do so.
