Creating a Breastfeeding-friendly Lanarkshire

  • Submitted by: Elaine Smith, Central Scotland, Scottish Labour.
  • Date lodged: Wednesday, 21 June 2017
  • Motion reference: S5M-06269

That the Parliament acknowledges National Breastfeeding Awareness week on 19 to 25 June 2017; congratulates NHS Lanarkshire on its continued efforts to support, promote and encourage everyone in Lanarkshire to choose breastfeeding as the natural, normal biological way to feed babies; notes that the maternity unit at Wishaw General Hospital has achieved its baby-friendly reaccreditation following the assessment in April; is aware of the well-documented evidence of the benefits to mother and baby of breastfeeding, especially the long-lasting effects on a baby’s heath and development; commends the 500 venues that acknowledge the Breastfeeding etc. (Scotland) Act 2005 by displaying newly designed Breastfeeding Welcome signs, and hopes that these actions will help to overcome cultural norms that discourage breastfeeding and help mums feel more confident and comfortable about feeding their babies in public places.
