Sir David Hempleman-Adams in Perth for Geographical Society's Inspiring People

  • Submitted by: Alexander Stewart, Mid Scotland and Fife, Scottish Conservative and Unionist Party.
  • Date lodged: Monday, 13 February 2017
  • Motion reference: S5M-04019

That the Parliament welcomes the arrival to Perth of Sir David Hempleman-Adams on 14 February 2017 to talk as part of the Royal Geographical Society’s Inspiring People programme; understands that, in June 2016, Sir David and his crew set sail from Bristol in their vessel, Northabout, to commence the Polar Ocean Challenge, which was to circumnavigate the North Pole anticlockwise thus demonstrating that Arctic sea ice coverage shrinks back so much in the summer that the sea, once totally locked in ice, is now passable; recognises that this talk will cover the inevitability of change in the Arctic and what the world can do to navigate the future of Arctic responsibility and that, with current shipping traffic, previously unable to pass through during the summer months, the habitats of all arctic animals and whole ecosystems within the sea will change drastically; notes that his talk, Polar Ocean Challenge, will be at the Salutation Hotel, and congratulates Sir David and all his crew on their endeavours.
