Theft of a Plaque in Honour of Robert Burns

  • Submitted by: Alison Harris, Central Scotland, Scottish Conservative and Unionist Party.
  • Date lodged: Thursday, 19 January 2017
  • Motion reference: S5M-03525

That the Parliament is saddened to learn of the theft of a plaque that was put up in 2012 at the Carron Iron Works gatehouse in honour of Robert Burns; notes that the plaque, which was the idea of the local councillor and historian, Billy Buchanan, marked the visit by the bard to what it sees as the iconic iron works on 26 August 1787; understands that, unfortunately, Rabbie had arrived on a Sunday and that the porter, not showing what it considers the usual Falkirk hospitality, turned both him and his companion, Willie Nicol, away, forcing the duo to seek solace at the Carron Inn; applauds the idea of the plaque as a way of keeping such stories in the public mind, and hopes for its early return.
