Support for Pilgrimage Route to Mark 900th Anniversary of St Magnus’s Death

  • Submitted by: Liam McArthur, Orkney Islands, Scottish Liberal Democrats.
  • Date lodged: Thursday, 27 October 2016
  • Motion reference: S5M-02170

That the Parliament supports the planned pilgrimage route, The St Magnus Way, across the Orkney mainland to mark the anniversary of the death of St Magnus 900 years ago; recognises that a new group called the Orkney Pilgrimage, chaired by the Reverend David McNeish, will help deliver the 51-mile route; notes that the route reflects the journey taken by St Magnus’s relics from Birsay to Kirkwall; further recognises the work is in partnership with the Rushen Heritage Trust to help bring new technologies into the route to reflect St Magnus’s life and example for 21st century pilgrims, and believes that The St Magnus Way will ensure his legacy for generations to come and engage more people with the heritage that surrounds them.
