Largs Viking Festival 2016

  • Submitted by: Kenneth Gibson, Cunninghame North, Scottish National Party.
  • Date lodged: Wednesday, 31 August 2016
  • Motion reference: S5M-01230

That the Parliament praises the annual Largs Viking Festival, which is running from 27 August to 4 September 2016; notes that the festival celebrates the rich Viking history associated with Largs, in particular the Battle of Largs in 1263, which ultimately helped secure the liberation of the Inner and Outer Hebrides from Norway and their addition to Scotland and the Clyde islands following the Treaty of Perth in 1266; believes that the festival’s main attraction is the Viking Village, which shows how the Vikings lived in a recreated, authentic 13th century village; understands that a Scottish Food and Craft Fayre is open every day, offering a unique shopping experience; recognises that the festival will culminate in a party at Broomfields, just north of the Battle of Largs monument, with a re-enactment of the 1263 battle and the burning of a long ship, before a fireworks display; applauds the Largs Viking Festival Committee for creating an event that helps to educate and celebrate local history, bringing knowledge and enjoyment both to locals and visitors alike; wishes all those involved every success with the rest of the event, and looks forward to the return of the Largs Viking Festival for many years to come.
