That the Parliament congratulates Katie D’Souza, a teacher at Inverkip Primary School in Inverclyde, on winning the prestigious Breaking Barriers award at the Scottish Association of Minority Ethnic Educators (SAMEE) awards on 28 August 2025; notes that the award recognises individuals who have been inspirational and effective role models through driving reform, campaigning, and being agents of change; further notes that Ms D’Souza was also shortlisted for the Outstanding Contribution to Anti-Racist Practice in the Classroom award; acknowledges her previous accolades, including being a joint winner of the Saroj Lal Award for a Pioneering Spirit in Equality and Diversity in 2022 and her involvement in the COSLA award-winning Inverclyde Links to Slavery project in 2023; commends her work at Newark Primary School, including the creation of the widely used, anti-racism film, We Are All Special: Newark Primary Against Racism, and a pupil-led advertising campaign promoting anti-racism; recognises her continued leadership in anti-racist education in her current role at Inverkip Primary, including her partnership with the Watt Institution in Greenock on a new animation project exploring Scotland’s colonial past; celebrates her recent appointment as an Education Scotland associate to support anti-racist development work nationally, and applauds her commitment to empowering pupils and educators to tackle racism and promote equality across Scotland.
