Bronze Bust of Rabindranath Tagore, Nobel Prize Winner, Unveiled in Edinburgh

  • Submitted by: Foysol Choudhury, Lothian, Scottish Labour.
  • Date lodged: Thursday, 28 August 2025
  • Motion reference: S6M-18400

That the Parliament welcomes the unveiling of a bronze bust of Rabindranath Tagore, the Indian Nobel Laureate for Literature in Sandeman House Garden, Edinburgh; understands that Rabindranath Tagore was the first non-European Nobel Prize winner in any category, winning for Literature in 1913, and a polymath with expertise in writing, composing, philosophy education and art; notes that the bust is positioned opposite the bust of his close friend, Scottish polymath, Sir Patrick Geddes, symbolising the long term links between Scotland and India; recognises that the bust was gifted to the Scottish Centre of Tagore Studies by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations, and hopes that the legacy of Tagore and Rabindranath will continue to be honoured through Scottish-Indian collaboration and exchange, and inspire others to learn more about Rabindranath Tagore.
