Value of Free Education

  • Submitted by: John Mason, Glasgow Shettleston, Independent.

  • Motion reference: S6M-18386

That the Parliament welcomes the reported comments on education made by the Glasgow-born artist, Jasleen Kaur; congratulates her on receiving an honorary doctorate from the Glasgow School of Art and for the unveiling of a public mural in her honour near the Gurdwara that she attended as a child; recognises her achievement in becoming the 2023 Turner Prize winner; notes Jasleen's reported testimony about the importance of free, state-funded education in enabling her to access the creative industries, particularly as someone from a background without traditional access to galleries or arts spaces; notes her reflection that talent alone is not enough, and that removing financial barriers is essential to ensuring that working-class and underrepresented young people can pursue their potential; further notes Jasleen's reported concern for the future of the arts in education and her belief in the importance of public support, from nursery through to higher education; believes that her story is an example of what can be achieved when access to education is a right, not a privilege, and hopes that the Scottish Government and educational institutions reaffirm their commitment to maintaining free access to higher education for decades to come.
