  • Motion reference: S6M-18363

That the Parliament acknowledges what it sees as the overwhelming success of the Orkney 2025 International Island Games, which ran from 12 to 18 July; understands that the week-long event marked the 20th staging of the games on the 40-year anniversary of the event; notes that athletes from 24 island groups from across the world competed in 12 sports, including archery, athletics, badminton, bowls, cycling, football, golf, gymnastics, sailing, squash, swimming and triathlon; recognises that Orkney, following in the footsteps of Shetland, which hosted the Games in 2005, becomes the smallest island group ever to host this multi-sport competition; notes that, with an estimated 3,000 visitors to the islands, the Games were the largest event ever hosted by Orkney; pays tribute to the Orkney 2025 Organising Committee and the Games Director, Kirsty Talbot and her deputy, Jo Henry, for their outstanding leadership; commends Orkney Islands Council, the Scottish Government, sportscotland, EventScotland and the range of local and national sponsors without whom such a Games would not be possible; acknowledges that delivering an event on this scale requires a community-wide effort and believes that the public in Orkney have more than stepped up to the mark; pays particular tribute to the 900 volunteers, affectionately dubbed "the Tangerine Dream Machine", who, it considers, were the beating heart, helping hands and smiling faces of the Games; celebrates the astonishing success of Orkney’s athletes, who secured a record haul of 31 medals, including 11 golds, four of which were won by double sprint and relay champion, Taylah Paterson; congratulates the Western Isles and Shetland on their impressive performances as well as hosts of the next Games, Faroe, which topped the table with 95 medals; recognises that this success and the performances witnessed across all 12 sports relies heavily on the commitment, not just of the athletes, but their coaches, officials, support teams and volunteers; believes that all involved in organising, competing and participating in the 2025 International Island Games have done themselves, and their islands, proud; looks forward to Orkney 2025 laying the foundations for a positive and lasting legacy for sport, friendship and community resilience in each of the islands, and wishes all involved in the organisation of the 2027 International Island Games in the Faroe Islands all the very best as they take on the torch from a proud, if slightly exhausted, Orkney.
