Andy's Man Club

  • Submitted by: Foysol Choudhury, Lothian, Scottish Labour.

  • Motion reference: S6M-17459

That the Parliament recognises what it sees as the important work of the charity, Andy's Man Club, in supporting men in dealing with their mental health; understands that Andy's Man Club takes its name from Andrew Roberts, a man who took his life aged 23 in 2016, and whose family had no idea that he was struggling with his mental health; notes with sadness that suicide is the largest cause of death for men under the age of 50, and believes that the cultural stigma around male mental health has contributed to this; understands that, following Andrew Roberts’ death, his family established Andy's Man Club to give men a place to speak openly about their mental health in a judgement-free, non-clinical environment; further understands that there are now over 280 Andy's Man Club groups across the UK, including over 50 in Scotland and eight in the Lothian region; believes that open, understanding discussion of mental health saves lives, and encourages anyone struggling to speak to someone or seek support.
