That the Parliament recognises Cleft Lip and Palate Awareness Week, taking place from 3 to 11 May 2025, which aims to raise awareness and understanding of cleft lip and/or palate, a condition affecting around one in every 700 babies born in the UK; understands that a cleft can impact feeding, hearing, speech, dental health and emotional wellbeing, often requiring years of multidisciplinary treatment and support; applauds the work of the Cleft Lip and Palate Association (CLAPA), the UK charity for everyone affected by a cleft, in providing vital services to children, adults and families affected by a cleft across Scotland and the UK, including one-to-one peer support, specialised feeding equipment, events and groups, online communities, and information tailored to each stage of the cleft journey; notes the range of activities taking place during the week, including fundraising events, awareness-raising campaigns and personal story-sharing, which, it believes, helps to challenge stigma and promote visibility of the cleft community, and encourages the public and MSPs to support the week by engaging with CLAPA’s work, listening to those with lived experience, and helping to ensure that those affected by a cleft receive the support and understanding that they need.
