That the Parliament congratulates the retired Glasgow firefighter, Jim Smith, who has been honoured in The King's New Year Honours list by being appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE); understands that the 83-year-old, who joined the fire service 60 years ago, was based at one of the busiest fire stations in Western Europe, namely Soho Street in the East End of Glasgow; further understands that, following the deaths of seven colleagues in a warehouse fire, he became actively involved in pioneering work on fire safety, engaging with businesses, schools and the public, and notes that he has developed valuable historical reference materials for firefighters, academics and the public, and that his tireless work allows future generations to learn from the past.
