That the Parliament celebrates the recognition of Orkney instrumental teacher, Douglas Montgomery, and the late Orcadian folk musician, Billy Jolly, at the 2024 Scots Trad Music Awards; understands that Douglas was named Music Tutor of the Year in the award category sponsored by Creative Scotland Youth Music Initiative; believes that the award is richly deserved and reflects Douglas’s many years of dedication to teaching, supporting and inspiring young people in Orkney to take up and immerse themselves in traditional music; understands that many of those who benefited from Douglas’s teaching have gone on to enjoy successful careers in music, while a great many more continue to draw on the skills and self-confidence his approach to music tuition brings; believes that these benefits underscore the invaluable contribution made by Douglas and instrumental music teachers all across Scotland; celebrates the induction into the Trad Music Hall of Fame of Billy Jolly, who sadly passed away earlier this year; acknowledges what it sees as this richly deserved recognition of the talent and influence of the late Billy Jolly, who was a passionate ambassador for the cultural heritage of Orcadian music on an international stage; believes firmly that, as a much-loved and respected icon of Orkney traditional music, Billy is worthy of his place in any musical hall of fame, and pays tribute to the contribution made by both Douglas and Billy in enhancing Orkney’s reputation for traditional music and encouraging those of all ages to play, enjoy and get the most out of music.
