Leuchars Primary School Teacher Named North East Fife Citizen of the Year

  • Submitted by: Claire Baker, Mid Scotland and Fife, Scottish Labour.
  • Date lodged: Thursday, 25 May 2023
  • Motion reference: S6M-09130

That the Parliament congratulates Leuchars Primary School teacher, Tony Russell, who set up a community fridge in the school, on being named as North East Fife Citizen of the Year; understands that Tony had been part of a team researching the impact of poverty on children’s learning for the Educational Institute of Scotland, and became focused on creating a school-based community fridge; notes that Leuchars Larder opened in September 2022, and promotes Leuchars Primary as a key contributor to making the neighbourhood stronger, supporting the communities of Leuchars and Guardbridge, and reducing food waste; recognises that the project has added a significant extra purpose to the school, and has had a clear influence on the school ethos; believes that Leuchars Larder acknowledges and responds to people in the community; understands that specialist help and advice is also provided at Leuchars Larder from Fife Council, and that pupils from P5 to P7 assist with unpacking the food donations and during the collection period; notes that food donations are received weekly from Fare Share and St Andrews Morrisons, and extends its very best wishes to Tony for all his efforts and his dedication to relieving the pressures on people in the local community who might be experiencing difficulties due to the cost of living crisis.
