Walking One Million Steps for Samaritans

  • Submitted by: Liam McArthur, Orkney Islands, Scottish Liberal Democrats.
  • Date lodged: Wednesday, 29 March 2023
  • Motion reference: S6M-08373

That the Parliament commends Orkney resident, Norman Wood, on walking one million steps in March 2023 to raise money and awareness for the suicide-prevention charity, Samaritans; understands that Mr Wood has raised nearly £2,000 for his cause, walking an average of 16 miles per day; notes that the Samaritans offers round-the-clock support to anyone who is struggling to cope or feeling suicidal, as well as working to reduce the factors that make people more likely to take their own lives; understands that this charity is close to Mr Wood’s heart, as someone who has experienced depression and knows people who have been helped by Samaritans after having nowhere else to turn; further understands that Mr Wood is a former alcoholic, now in his 23rd month sober, who began taking therapeutic walks as part of his rehabilitation, and credits these in part for helping him challenge addiction; recognises the support that he has reportedly found in the Twitter community, #RecoveryPosse, who help one another in recovering from addictions; praises the vital work being carried out by Samaritans, as well as Mr Wood’s impressive efforts to support them, and wishes Mr Wood every success in the future.
