Strathearn Residents' Efforts for Blythswood Care's 2022 Shoe Box Appeal

  • Submitted by: Jim Fairlie, Perthshire South and Kinross-shire, Scottish National Party.
  • Date lodged: Monday, 06 February 2023
  • Motion reference: S6M-07680

That the Parliament congratulates the efforts of Strathearn residents towards Blythswood Care’s 2022 Shoe Box appeal; understands that, in 2022, Strathearn residents generously contributed more than 2,000 boxes, £1,961 in donations for transport costs, and 233 aid boxes full of blankets and warm clothing for the appeal, with local churches, schools, groups and individuals supporting a campaign that totalled nearly 89,000 boxes donated across the UK; notes that, through the appeal, boxes filled with small, practical items such as toiletries, stationery and clothing are distributed in schools, hospitals, orphanages, care homes and to households in very low income communities, with many going to those affected by the war in Ukraine as well as to Albania, Bulgaria, Hungary, Kosovo, Moldova, Romania and Serbia; endorses the statement of Blythswood’s Head of Projects, Finlay Mackenzie, that "at a time when everyone is concerned with rising household bills at home, it was a terrific response to our appeal"; notes that local volunteers established the Blythswood Local Support Group shop, in Crieff, seven years ago, which is entirely run using donations, has autonomy from Blythswood Care, and has donated funds raised towards local projects, with plans to support school projects that aim to benefit many local children; recognises the efforts of Kate Clements, who has organised the shoe box collection operation in Strathearn for over 20 years, and thanks her and all local campaigners for their past endeavours, and wishes them continued success with their future campaigning efforts.
