Merchant Navy Day 2022

  • Submitted by: Bill Kidd, Glasgow Anniesland, Scottish National Party.
  • Date lodged: Monday, 29 August 2022
  • Motion reference: S6M-05757

That the Parliament recognises Merchant Navy Day, which is celebrated annually on 3 September; notes that the Merchant Navy emblem is one of four services on the Knightswood Cross Remembrance Garden Cenotaph, which was dedicated in 2010 "to all those Glasgow veterans past, present and future who have serviced our country in the armed forces and the merchant navy"; highlights the historic role and risk of workers in supplying food during the First World War, which awarded the commercial shipping trade this title, and again in the Second World War, despite significant risk from torpedoes; recognises the vital role of the Merchant Navy in supporting the transportation of food and international trade, with it understands around 90% of goods carried over the waves, and notes reports that, due to the increasing demand for global freight, maritime trade volumes are set to triple by 2050, which it believes reinforces the importance of this workforce to global demands for food and many other key commodities.
