Welcoming the SRUC Opening a New Vet School

  • Submitted by: Jeremy Balfour, Lothian, Scottish Conservative and Unionist Party.
  • Date lodged: Tuesday, 14 June 2022
  • Motion reference: S6M-04805

That the Parliament welcomes the plan of Scotland's Rural College (SRUC) to open a new school of veterinary medicine that will offer veterinary programmes ranging from Higher National Diplomas to postgraduate degrees; notes that it will be based in Aberdeen, making it the first vet school in Scotland outside of Edinburgh and Glasgow, as well as Scotland's first new school of veterinary medicine for more than 150 years; understands that the school will aim to widen participation using bespoke Gateway courses and provide veterinary training through work-based teaching to align student recruitment and employability in shortage areas, which, it considers, are essential to support Scotland’s highly prized rural and food sectors; welcomes the estimated £26 million GVA and 238 jobs that the school is predicted to deliver by 2030, providing a significant boost to regional and national growth in Scotland's natural economy, and wishes the SRUC all the best going forward with this exciting project.
