Salmon Farming To ask the Scottish Executive what progress is being made with the application to the European Union to safeguard the Scottish salmon farming industry.
As a consequence of our collaboration with the Chinese Government, the Chinese market for Scottish exported salmon has been opened up in recent months, and the scale of impact on the salmon-farming industry in Scotland is going to be colossal.

Fisheries Research Services’(FRS) previous experience in salmon farming principally resides with staff of theFish Health Inspectorate who visit salmon farms on a regular basis in the courseof implementing the statutory fish health regime.
It is obviously the case that we need to continue to monitor the impact of salmon farming, in particular, on those communities and on the environment in which they are located.
Is the minister aware that the Crown Estate removes £1 million per annum from salmon farms in Shetland and many millions of pounds per annum from salmon farms throughout Scotland?
Does the First Minister agree that salmon farming is absolutely essential to the economy of the Highlands, and the west Highlands in particular, sustaining as it does more than 6,000 jobs where there are no alternatives?
