In terms of sex, the 2020 report found that, after adjusting for age, males were 2.7 times as likely to have a drug-related death as females in 2020 (37.3 deaths per 100,000 population compared to 13.6). However, over time this gap has decreased – in the early 2000s males were more than 4 times as likely to have a drug-related death as female.
