Tourism-focused measures such as the Transient Visitor Levy being considered in Edinburgh may not generate revenue for Dundee, as visitors would not necessarily seek accommodation in the city.
We are looking at mechanisms, and we are liaising with the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs on UK approaches, including levies, so we are looking actively across the board at how we might work through that.
In the cabinet secretary’s letter of 11 May, she referred to the postponement of work on the transient visitor levy and short-term lets. Is there a timetable for the resumption of that work?
I note that neither the consultation that I mentioned nor the bill makes any reference to an upper limit on what can be levied. The seven questions in the consultation do not include a question on that.
In last week’s debate at stage 2, when we considered sanctions for a breach of the rules, I raised a concern that levying substantial fines long after the event would not be a sufficient deterrent.
