I agree with Colin Borland’s point about keeping taxes down, which is one reason why we were against the retail levy that came into effect earlier this year, and we do not support the empty premises tax hike that will come into effect next year.

I have no comment on the instrument, which is necessary in many ways, but there is an emerging trend in the instruments that come before us: the charges that the Government levies are increasing at a rate that is significantly higher than the rate of inflation.
