Short survey summary

There were a very wide range of suggestions in response to this question, so they have been grouped by theme: • Outreach o Knock on doors, and visit people in their homes o Set up groups for communicating with certain communities, or community hubs, and maintain a clear line of contact with those groups, and proactively work with groups that are under-represented o Work with TSIs and community councils to understand the areas/groups that are underrepresented o Weekend voxpop’s in city centres o Organise more events outside of Edinburgh and online o Have a physical presence in constituencies, perhaps in conjunction with local authorities o Use paper surveys delivered through mailboxes o Roadshows visiting small communities • Communication/marketing o A communication strategy o Posters in places like GP surgeries and community centres o Be more proactive about telling people about opportunities to participate o Broadcast info on all of the work of the Scottish Parliament on TV and on the radio, and run newspaper adverts o Reach out to people whose first language is not English in their native language • Education o Work closely with schools o Explain the status quo and give more detail on statistics etc when presenting an issue o Provide more education on the Parliament/MSPs and their role for audiences of all ages • Online resources o A specific Facebook page where people can debate issues (closely moderated) o Have every engagement opportunity online as well as in person o Improve the website Scottish Parliament o Use direct online democracy, and have younger staff working on these approaches • Cultural change o Ensure engagement has impact o Listen instead of just using surveys o Be less formal – fewer people in suits, and less jargon o Give participants more agency and control over how they engage o Ensure MSPs are more visible, open and accessible o Treat people with dignity and respect, and don’t be dismissive of people’s views o Ask for feedback more often o Rely less on single issue groups and organisations.
