Supported by: Monica Lennon*, John Mason*, Iain Gray*, Andy Wightman* *S5M-10187 Brian Whittle: Raising Awareness of Venous Thromboembolism in Pregnant Women That the Parliament recognises the importance of raising public awareness of venous — thromboembolism (VTE) among pregnant women; understands that, when a blood clot forms in the leg, which is known as a deep vein thrombosis (DVT), if the clot breaks loose and travels to a person s lungs, it is called a pulmonary embolism (PE), and together they are known as VTE; ’ notes that pregnant women are more likely to develop a VTE than non-pregnant women of the same age; acknowledges that, if left undetected and untreated, a VTE can be fatal, but that simple actions such as remaining as active as possible and not sitting for too long without moving your legs can help to prevent clots from forming; welcomes recent updates to Ready, Steady, Baby, a free advice resource distributed to all pregnant women in Scotland, which added more information about VTE, and notes the view that it is vitally important that efforts to increase awareness and education around DVT and VTE in pregnancy continue in order to reduce future occurrences of this condition among pregnant women in the South Scotland region and throughout the country.
