Although legislation on equal opportunities is clearly a reserved matter, it is absolutely right that equal opportunities is at the heart of the Scotland Act 1998, the Parliament's standing orders, the members' code of conduct, the work of the Equal Opportunities Committee and the Executive's equality unit.

Where derogatory language is used, we need to point that out to people in the media and remind them that they have their own guidelines and that the Press Complaints Commission has a code of practice.Reminding people of how they should behave and picking them up when they get it wrong is one thing, but that is not enough.
