In the past, it has too often been the case that social workers received their professional qualification and then did not undertake any further training to ensure that their skills were kept up to date. Precisely so. That is why the Scottish Social Services Council has that issue on its agenda and is proceeding with it.

The knowledge that we now have about how harmful substances such as asbestos can be to the health of the work force shows the importance of having up-to-date research. We need to provide the best available information to everyone in the workplace.However, instead of concentrating on hazardous materials, I want to focus on health and safety in general.

The committee needs to get the most up-to-date figures available for that. If fees are introduced in England but not in Scotland, I would expect that number of places to increase, and that students from the north of England especially would be trying to cross the border and get into Scottish universities.

I have a letter sent from the Department for Work and Pensions to retirement pension customers. It is dated 9 February 2003 and, as other members have said, it states that"What we ask you to do now" is simply to pick up the telephone and dial a freephone number, and that customers who do that can sign up very easily.

The value of the system is that it eliminates at the beginning of the procedure mistakes that might create problems with the audit trail at a later date. I was impressed by that system and I ask the minister to describe it further.
