I thought that he was going to make me responsible for the date of the general election.As Mr McLetchie is aware, the view was taken that, on balance—and it was a balanced judgment—there were advantages to holding the 1999 local elections on the same day as the elections to the Scottish Parliament.

We should recognise that the petition raises important issues, but that we will want to consider the matter more comprehensively at some future date.
