Any information that the chief constable decides to retain can be retained only in accordance with the principles of the Data Protection Act 1998; safeguards that are already built in allow the retention only of information that the chief constable considers to be relevant, necessary and up to date. If something is clearly malicious and false, how can it be relevant, necessary and up to date?
