Stop Defence and Security Equipment International

  • Submitted by: Ross Greer, West Scotland, Scottish Green Party.
  • Date lodged: Tuesday, 05 September 2017
  • Motion reference: S5M-07493

That the Parliament notes that the Defence and Security Equipment International (DSEI), which is one of the world’s largest arms fairs, is due to take place in London in September 2017; considers that weapons and equipment sold at the DSEI fuel death, destruction and oppression across the world; understands that the fair involves potential buyers from authoritarian regimes that use arms to violate the human rights of citizens in their own countries and in the territories that they occupy; notes reports that a UK judge has ruled that there is compelling evidence that illegal weaponry has been advertised at previous DSEI fairs; expresses support for Stop DSEI, which is organised by the Campaign Against Arms Trade, faith groups and peace campaigners, and calls on the Scottish Government to ensure that no state support through Scottish Enterprise and Highlands and Islands Enterprise, or its other agencies, is given to the arms industry.
