Blawarthill Parish Church Celebrates 60 Years

  • Submitted by: Bill Kidd, Glasgow Anniesland, Scottish National Party.
  • Date lodged: Tuesday, 08 October 2024
  • Motion reference: S6M-14832
  • Current status: Fallen

That the Parliament notes that Blawarthill Parish Church is celebrating 60 years of worship with a thanksgiving service on 20 October 2024, inviting past members of the Brownies, Girl Guides and Boys Brigade to come along; notes that the Parish of Blawarthill lies in an area in the north west of Glasgow, and that the name Blawarthill is taken from a farm of that name that stood on the Blawart Hill at the top of what is now known as Plean Street, with "blawart" being an old Scots name for "bluebell"; understands that, on 16 February 2023, Blawarthill Parish underwent its first ever adjustment, as it entered into a linkage with St Columba Gaelic congregation; notes that Blawarthill and St Columba congregations meet every Sunday at 11.00 am, and that services are held in English with some Gaelic content; understands that Blawarthill Church also offers a vital food bank service to the community, and has done for many years now, and that the foodbank operates every Tuesday and Friday from noon to 2.00 pm; considers that the church is as important to the community as it was 60 years ago, and wishes it a happy 60th birthday, with many more to come.
