Adult Human Female Viewing Cancelled Due to Protest

  • Submitted by: Tess White, North East Scotland, Scottish Conservative and Unionist Party.
  • Date lodged: Thursday, 27 April 2023
  • Motion reference: S6M-08742

That the Parliament notes with concern reports that a second attempt to screen the documentary, Adult Human Female, at the University of Edinburgh was prevented by protesters on 26 April 2023; understands that the event had to be cancelled because protesters were physically blocking all entrances to the venue; acknowledges that this stopped, it believes, 150 people from viewing and discussing the film about women’s rights with its makers; understands that the event had been rescheduled after protesters blocked the screening on 14 December 2022 at another venue on the University of Edinburgh campus; recognises that motion S5M-17604 in the name of Jenny Marra in June 2019 stated that "universities should be safe places for complex and sometimes controversial discussions to take place", and urges the University of Edinburgh, and all academic institutions, to defend freedom of speech and facilitate critical thinking and difficult debate.
