GMAC Martial Arts Take Gold Silver and Bronze

  • Submitted by: Clare Adamson, Motherwell and Wishaw, Scottish National Party.
  • Date lodged: Tuesday, 29 November 2022
  • Motion reference: S6M-06964

That the Parliament congratulates GMAC Martial Arts, which is based in Wishaw, on winning medals at both the ITF Taekwondo World Cup in Slovenia and the Irish National Championships in Limerick; notes that Declan McAvoy took silver in sparring, Jaimie Singleton won two bronze medals in sparring and special technique categories at the World Cup and that Jaimie won two golds in special technique and power; further notes that Lorna Ferguson struck gold in third degree patterns, silver in the power category, bronze in sparring and was declared the joint best overall female; commends Lennon McAvoy for his determination and dedication overcoming many barriers to attend his first event at the Irish National Championships; understands that Taekwondo has been in the Olympic Games since Sydney 2000 and that it is regarded as one of the most systematic and scientific of the Korean traditional martial arts, which teaches more than physical fighting skills; believes that it is a discipline that shows ways of enhancing the spirit and life through training the body and mind; considers that GMAC’s success will now inspire many across Wishaw and Motherwell to take up the sport, and wishes GMAC Martial Arts continued success in the future as they look to build on this incredible achievement.
