Kippford Leaning Tree Wins Top Honours in UK Contest

  • Submitted by: Finlay Carson, Galloway and West Dumfries, Scottish Conservative and Unionist Party.
  • Date lodged: Friday, 17 December 2021
  • Motion reference: S6M-02570

That the Parliament recognises that a lone hawthorn tree at Kippford on the glorious west coast of Scotland, in Dumfries and Galloway, has been crowned the Woodland Trust’s UK Tree of the Year; understands that the tree has been praised over its striking presence, and acknowledges that the tree defeated nine other rivals to clinch the top title; notes that this is the second year in a row that the honour has gone to southern Scotland; commends tree surgeon, Drew Patterson, who nominated the winning hawthorn known as the Kippford Leaning Tree, and hopes that the tree, believed to be 60 years old, will enjoy further success and recognition in the European Tree of the Year competition.
