Seal Deterrent Project Team Shortlisted for Civil Service Award

  • Submitted by: Liam Kerr, North East Scotland, Scottish Conservative and Unionist Party.
  • Date lodged: Wednesday, 17 November 2021
  • Motion reference: S6M-02134

That the Parliament congratulates the Seal Deterrent Project Team, which operated out of Rosehearty Harbour, on being shortlisted in the Science and Innovation category at 2021 Civil Service Awards; notes that the project set out to solve the disruption that seals cause to the inshore handline mackerel fishery industry in the north east; understands that they follow boats as they leave the harbour to both search for and locate fish, which can lead to them interfering with the vessels' operations and dispersing shoals; notes that the project used targeted acoustic startle technology (TAST) to deter seals in the vicinity of vessels and to stop them becoming injured in fishing equipment; understands that the use of TAST led to a 97% decrease in such seal activity; applauds the work carried out by everyone on the team, and wishes them all the best.
