Election of First Openly Transgender State Senator to the Delaware State Senate

  • Submitted by: Mary Fee, West Scotland, Scottish Labour.
  • Date lodged: Friday, 06 November 2020
  • Motion reference: S5M-23284

That the Parliament congratulates Sarah McBride on her election to the Delaware State Senate; understands that she is the first openly transgender state senator in US history; considers that this is a monumental moment for LGBTQ representation in public office worldwide; believes that this is a major achievement, especially during a time when, it considers, hatred towards transgender women in particular is on the rise; acknowledges that this was only achieved due to the hard work and dedication of the LGBTQ community and organisers within it; considers that this is only the beginning of the increase in trans representation in politics, and wishes her the best of luck in her new appointment.
