End Smear Fear Campaign

  • Submitted by: Monica Lennon, Central Scotland, Scottish Labour.
  • Date lodged: Thursday, 19 September 2019
  • Motion reference: S5M-18982

That the Parliament commends Jo’s Trust on its partnership with Twitter for the campaign, End Smear Fear, which is taking place from 16 to 22 September 2019 as part of Sexual Health Awareness Week; recognises the importance of this campaign to promoting the importance of cervical screening, following reports that suggest around one third of women aged 25 to 29 avoid going for their smear test; understands that the campaign seeks to encourage supportive conversations regarding smear tests on Twitter and creates a safe place to ask questions, share tips and offer encouragement to women, transgender and non-binary people who find attending a smear test appointment a cause for stress or fear; understands that conversations around smear tests, vaginas and sexual health on Twitter have risen by 50% since 2017; believes that this indicates that people are feeling more comfortable about discussing such issues, and supports Jo's Trust in its work to encourage supportive conversations and provide a platform for people to access support and information.
